What is a case for support?

A case for support is a crucial internal document (never shared externally or with funders) which details your organisation's work or project(s). It makes the case for why you and your beneficiaries need funding, what the funding will be spent on and the impact.

It is a key process in fundraising and is also used to plan how you communicate the purpose and impact of your organisation or project to potential supporters.

A well-crafted case for support includes:
  • Organisational information
  • The need for your work the project
  • The outputs (what you will do and when)
  • The outcomes (the difference it will make)
  • Line-by-line budget
  • Recognition opportunities
  • Case studies and quotes
Proposals (external documents) are then based on the information in the case for support.
